| This
most recent April, Mr. Richards had the pleasure of hearing the New
York City Opera perform sections of his opera A Star Across The Ocean -
Paris 1965 featuring Tony Award Winner, Chuck Cooper and Darius DeHaas
as a part of the 2010 VOX festival. Recent works include A
Thousand Words Come to Mind (Words by Michele Lowe) commissioned by
Paulette Haupt for the Inner Voices production at The Zipper 2008
starring Barbara Walsh, A Christmas Story at Kansas City Rep, Charlie
Crosses the Nation, An Opera in Jazz Idiom - NYC Opera VOX 2008 and the
Yale Rep Production of Dance of the Holy Ghosts by - A play with music
by Marcus Gardley with whom Mr. Richards is currently collaborating on
Rumble of Myth a musical about the 1974 Ali-Foreman fight in Zaire.
Other musical theatre works include music for Coyote Goes Salmon
Fishing (directed by Molly Smith at Perseverance Theatre/produced by
Stuart Ostrow in Houston.) and Sanctuary D. C., a rap musical about the
homeless in Washington (Helen Hayes Award Nomination.) His play-scores have been heard at resident theatres around the country; Highlights include the world premiere of Lee Blessing’s Cobb at The Yale Repertory and the U. S. premiere of Nikos Kazantzakis’s Christopher Columbus at the New Federal Theater. Works for children include a number of commissions from Theatreworks U. S. A.; Corduroy (music, lyrics, orchestration), Sundiata! The Lion King of Mali (music, lyrics, orchestration), Island of the Blue Dolphins (orchestrations) and Junie B. Jones (orchestrations.) As an actor, Mr. Richards originated the role of Sylvester in the original Broadway production of August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and assisted his father, Lloyd Richards in the origination of 3 other Wilson works. A recipient of the Jonathan Larson, Frederick Loewe, Meet the Composer, and most recently, the American Music Center's Composer Assistance awards, he taught on the faculty of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program from 1997-2009 and currently holds a position as Associate Professor of Musical Theatre/Composition at Montclair State University’s Cali School of Music. From 1995-2005, he was a teaching artist with Lincoln Center Institute where he authored publications for the Heckscher Foundation Research Center on such various subjects as The Blues, Margaret Leng Tan (The Art of the Toy Piano), and The Tangos of Astor Piazzolla.
